Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Dr Rose Oko, has mourned the killing of one of her constituents and graduate of Philosophy, Mr Edward Alibishi, allegedly killed by operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a department in the Nigerian Police Force.
While condemning the brutal murder, the Senator Rose, called on the inspector-general of police, Mr Ibrahim Idris to investigate the murder and bring the perpetrators to book.
The senator, who in a statement signed by her expressed displeasure over the killing of Alibishi that took place on December 28, 2017 at Gakem, a revenue control post owned by the Cross River State Government along the boundary between Cross River and Benue States, therefore called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately swing into action and investigate the killing and bring the culprits to book.
She said: “I am shocked, deeply saddened and bereft of words at the reckless killing of one of my constituents, Mr Edward Alibishi, a graduate of Philosophy by operatives of SARS on 28th Dec at Gakem revenue control post in what appears to be some fracas over control of the Post.
“A situation where operatives of law enforcement agencies are being used to terrorise individuals and communities over personal squabbles is in the very least regrettable, condemnable and against the tenets and aims of the establishment.
“I am using this medium to call on the IG of Police to investigate the murder and bring the perpetrators to book.”
However, she said the government should consider the negative actions of SARS operatives, which most of them have become tools of oppression and intimidation, which calls for urgent attention to retrain them and weed out ‘bad eggs’ among them.
“The SARS has become uncontrollable and should either be scrapped or better trained to eliminate rogue officers. The recklessness and indiscipline of these officers is growing. Must the nation endure more innocent deaths and acts of hooliganism before decisive action is taken?” she queried.
